In Memory Of CLR'S Founder

Dear Friends,

It is with profound sadness that the Campaign for Labor Rights announces the death of its founder and national coordinator, Trim Bissell on June 15th 2002. Trim fought a two-year valiant struggle against brain cancer. Until the end he remained actively involved in the struggles of workers toiling in sweatshops around the world.

Trim's life was devoted to making the world a just and equitable place. He worked tirelessly for the primacy of people over capital, and workers' rights over corporate greed. His vision inspired, illuminated and guided CLR's work. Trim lived a combination of hard-edged political vision fused with an artist's humanism and sensitivity, putting his painting and sculpture at the service of the movement. We will miss him deeply.

To his wife, Ruth Evan, and his family, who supported Trim's work, we express our gratitude and deepest condolences.

Trim asked us not to view his departure as a setback in our mission on behalf of workers' rights but instead to look at this period as a chance for renewal-an opening for CLR to new possibilities and growth.

Over the years, thousands of grassroots activists like you have built CLR into a strong network of solidarity in support of workers around the world. Our growing capacity to coordinate actions in the U.S. and across borders to make real gains for workers attests to the truth of Trim's vision for the Campaign for Labor Rights.

We plan to do just what Trim's asks - we will move forward with our work and re-double our efforts to support the struggles of workers around the world. In the next months, we plan to build and add infrastructure to our grassroots base and expand our educational programs. We intend to become more active in coalitions working on the issues of free trade and structural adjustment. We hope to actively make the links between the regimes of free trade and globalization and sweatshop abuses.

In order to bring all of these ambitious goals to fruition, we need to intensify our effort. And, now more than ever, when corporate and capital predation is widening its global reach, we urge you to continue to keep engaged with us in the fight for workers around the world. We are confident that with your help during this difficult period, the spirit of Trim's life and work will be carried forward in the months and years to come.

We wish to thank our supporters, allies, and active members for your telephone calls and letters of sympathy. One of our companeros from the STIT union in El Salvador upon hearing of Trim's death reminded us of a common Salvadoran saying, "With the example of our heroes and martyrs, we continue forward."

We are confident that Trim's legacy will continue to live on in our work.

In Solidarity,
CLR STEERING COMMITTEE:
