US and British Trade Union Centres appeal to Bush and Blair on IraqPosted Feb 2, 2003 On the eve of today's meeting between US President George Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, the ICFTU-affiliated AFL-CIO (US) and TUC (Great Britain) have appealed in a joint letter on 30 January to the two leaders to allow the United Nations Iraq weapons inspectors adequate time, and to "take every possible step to achieve the legitimate ends of disarming Iraq without recourse to war". The letter, signed by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and TUC General Secretary John Monks, urges the two governments to continue to work against totalitarianism and terrorism through the United Nations, and stresses that if the path of war is chosen as a last resort, it should be done on the basis of the fullest possible support of friends and allies of the two countries. The full text of the letter is available at: http://www.icftu.org/displaydocument.asp?Index=991217055&Language=EN For more information, please contact the ICFTU Press Department on +32 2 224 0232.
