1. Week Two: Global Month Against Sweatshops

They made our shoes, now they need our help.

The Month of Global Actions Against Sweatshops is Underway!

Every week until the end of May, thousands of people will be spending an hour each week handing out leaflets outside their local sports store. Eight human rights groups from around the world are taking part. More than 15,000 anti-sweatshop campaigners are being invited to participate.

Demand that Nike contribute to the severance pay of 7,000 Indonesian women and men who lost their jobs seven months ago! All sportswear brands are responsible for ensuring that workers' legal and human rights are respected in the factories that make their shoes and clothing!

In order to make our presence felt in the place that matters most to the big brands - the place where their products are sold - we need YOU to organize leafleting events in your area sports stores. The more of us who take part, the harder we are to ignore.

All of the information you need is online! Including background information, guidelines, and the action pack: http://www.campaignforlaborrights.org/campaigns/sweatshop_week/

Please forward this on to friends, and let us know about your actions by sending an email with the Subject: Leafleting to: organize@clrlabor.org

Don't miss this chance to be involved in the biggest global actions against sweatshops yet attempted!

(2) Colombian Union Needs Your Support!

From the IUF secretariat:

With great sorrow and anger we inform you of the murder of another officer of the Colombian rural workers union SINTRAINAGRO. Juan de Jesús Gómez, president of the local SINTRAINAGRO organization of Minas, in the municipality of San Martín, Cesar department, was gunned down on May 1 in the city of San Alberto.

The murder of Jesús Gómez brings to over 130 the number of union leaders murdered in Colombia over the past year. To date, no one has been prosecuted or even detained by the authorities in connection with these serial murders.

We urge you to join with us in calling on the Colombian authorities to ensure that all SINTRAINAGRO and other trade union leaders who request protection by the state are given adequate levels of protection, without conditions.

(3) No Scab Pizza: Tyson Food Strike Needs Your Help!

For nine long weeks, nearly 500 members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 538 have been on strike at the Tyson Foods (formerly Doskocil Foods) plant in Jefferson, Wisconsin. On April 7th, Tyson Foods announced that it was permanently replacing the strikers. Strikers from UFCW Local 538 are standing firm against these intimidation tactics.

Visit the strike website at www.tysonfamiliesstandup.org Learn about their struggle and what you can do to help them win!

Draconian cuts in health and pension benefits forced these families onto the street. The last "and best" Tyson offer:

Proposed to freeze wages for 4 years while CEO Jon Tyson got a million dollar salary.

Proposed a two-tier wage structure where new hires would be paid considerably less than their co-workers

Proposed to freeze worker pension benefits and discontinue the health insurance supplement for retirees.

Proposed several changes in the health plan that will increasde deductibles and out of pocket expenses

The workers of Local 538 rejected these terms overwhelmingly. They went on strike to get a contract they deserve. To see the other Tyson "offers" go to http://www.tysonfamiliesstandup.org/hall_of_shame/index.cfm and read more about what Tyson thinks its workers deserve!

Tyson Foods is spending $100 million to spread its marketing slogan - "Tyson- It's What Your Family Deserves." The company is putting full page ads in local newspapers trying to distort the details of their totally unacceptable contract offer, AT THE SAME TIME they are putting classified ads in those papers looking for scabs to cross the picket line and break the strike. No American family deserves the Tyson treatment.

The strikers are fighting hard, but need your help. Click on http://www.tysonfamiliesstandup.org/tyson_s_fictions/index.cfm

Find out the facts that expose Tyson's fictions!

The Jefferson plant is one the largest producers of pepperoni in the United States. The skills of its workers and the quality of the products made it a profitable business. Its products were in demand by some of the most recognizable names in the pizza business. Now, with the workers forced to go on strike for a fair contract, these pizza makers are taking the low-quality scab-eroni and serving it to the consumer.

TAKE ACTION!

Tell the pizza makers you don't want scabs with your pizza. Click on http://www.tysonfamiliesstandup.org/what_you_can_do/index.cfm to find how to contact the pizza companies to tell them to hold the pepperoni until the Jefferson workers get a fair contract!
