Urge
your Representative to Attend CAFTA Briefing!
URGENT ACTION: Briefing is Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 22
Though CAFTA has been signed, it must still be voted upon in Congress.
This is one of the most important times in which to educate your
congressperson about the perils of this free trade agreement that
favors big business and hurts everyone else.
Congressional Representatives Hilda L. Solis (D-CA) and Raul M.
Grijalva (D-AZ) have already notified their colleagues of this briefing,
which will feature leaders from important civil society groups representing
El Salvador and the Dominican-American community. Now it's important
for you, as a constituent, to ask your representative to be there
too!
Call the US Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, with your zip
code ready and they will connect you.
Tell your representative that there is a briefing on CAFTA, sponsored
by Reps. Solis and Grijalva, as well as the Committee in Solidarity
with the People of El Salvador (CISPES). There they will have the
opportunity to hear the impact CAFTA would have on the United States
and Central America , including its effect on the agricultural industry
and the migration of Central Americans to the United States . Speakers
include Guadalupe Erazo, a human rights activist from El Salvador
, and Dr. Francisco Acosta, founder of the Oscar Romero University
in El Salvador and an associate of CASA de Maryland, the largest
Latino advocacy organization in Maryland . Domingo de la Cruz, a
Dominican community leader from New York, will address Congress about
issues related to CAFTA that go beyond critiques of the labor and
environmental provisions.
The briefing is Tuesday, June 22, 2-4pm, in Longworth HOB 1116
