U.S. Labor Delegation in Solidarity with Colombian Workers

[This announcement is from the U.S. Labor Education in the Americas Project (US/LEAP)]

Celebrate May Day in Colombia!
April 29- May 7, 2005

(View the flyer online)

Colombian trade unionists are under fire. Over 2,000 Colombian trade unionists have been assassinated since 1991 with many others detained, kidnapped, tortured, and forced into exile. Despite the horrific levels of violence, Colombia's labor movement remains strong in their call for respect for their lives and their rights. This May 1st Colombian workers will come together to demand an end to the violence against trade unionists. Join them in their call for justice-sign up now for US/LEAP's labor delegation to Colombia!

Delegation participants will:

  • Join Colombian trade unionists in May Day celebrations. Delegates will be able to stand with their Colombian union sisters and brothers in their call for respect for worker rights, including a May Day march and other activities planned by Colombian partners.
  • Connect with Colombian trade unionists. Meetings will take place with Colombian trade unions and worker rights and human rights groups working on violence and impunity issues. Efforts will be made to accommodate requests by delegation members to meet with counterpart unions.
  • Learn about the effects of U.S. trade and aid policies. Delegates will be able to join the call of the Colombian trade union movement in saying no to aid and trade policies that hurt workers such as the proposed Andean Free Trade Agreement (AFTA), which would liberalize trade and investment between the U.S. and Colombia and weaken protections for worker rights.
  • Voice opposition to violence and impunity in Colombia directly to the U.S. embassy and the Colombian government, underscoring U.S. trade union concerns for threats facing the Colombian labor movement.
